Day 11 - Friday:  Well, things are getting close to the end of this adventure.  When we finally left the motel it was after 9 AM with the temperature still in the 30's.  David had a blanket that we modified to fit over the gear shift so we could tuck it around our legs. We bundled up with several layers of clothes and headed out on Route 66.  This day was to be about 50% 66 and hi way 40.  The first part slow so we did not freeze to death.  The old cars, gas stations, very large features like the large Hare kept the them of the route alive. We whe were disappointed in the Gallup tribute to the Navaho Indians that were know as the "Code Talkers ".  The solders played a significant place in World War II against Japan because the Japanese could not read the Navaho language thus making coded messages unbreakable.  There was I a movie made about them. We found only a statue.

We ran across several other small groups of folks touring the Route.  Kind of fun to meet up at each road side site. Near the end of the day found us on the longest section of the route that lead into Kingman. It is close to 100 miles and ventures a ways off Hiway 40 and after 6PM before we checked into the Hotel. It seems that Kingman is having a hotel room war and our last night was less than $60.  Nice!

Saturday May be the last day of the trip. If  things go well, we will venture to Oatman, Needles, and then up Laughlin, NV for David to drop off Gil and we all head home.  Stay tuned.

Well we did it. We finished the trip 2322 miles.  We arrived home about 4:30 Mountain time. We left  the hotel about 8:30 and started the last of the route we had planned up to Oatman. The road was as we remembered it some 39 years ago when we took it in our very first new car, a Chevy Vega :). We visited the rebuilt Cool Springs Compound. Rebuilt because Hollywood blew it up in the Van Damm movie the Ultimate Soldier.  The person running it was fun and gave us some history.  Then we were off to Oatman. This town has changed a bunch. Lots more for the tourist. Complete with burrows in the street. As we were leaving Steve changed into shorts again.  Nice change from the cold we dealt with the last few days. Another tourist came running over to the car wanting to talk about it and get a  picture taken with it. He was more excited about seeing the car than he was for visiting the town.  At lunch in Laughlin we all separated and headed to our homes. What a great trip! Thanks for enjoying it with us.

Day 10 - Thursday. We did not think we did much this day but looking at the pictures we made a few stops. Russell's was interesting. Besides a diner there is a nice car museum. Ol Art took a liking to us ! Explaining the owner had over 200 cars. Some of which had never been driven. He then followed us out to the Cobra where he took a bunch of pictures for iOS display. The Cad also is being displayed.  Later we found the Blue Swallow motel and the 66 visitors center. The gal there was great. After that things Got dicey. We could see the weather in front and the wind kicked up to a point we had to stop. We took refuge in the Cad for about an hour. We finally got a break and headed for Albuquerque. Again we got caught and decided to head for Gallup. We missed seeing Chris and Arlene in Albuquerque. We did not make About 30 miles from there we ran into hail and decided to call it a day. It was after 5 anyway.

Day 9- Thursday. This was a day of travel. Especially in Texas at 80 mph.  We  Left Oklahoma City and found the route again.  We visited Ukon,  the home of Garth Brooks. Traveling a bit off the road we found the community jail. It looked like a place to avoid. As we travelled along the road turned to gravel. We reversed direction and found pavement.  After a few turns we were back on the route. We ran across the giant pop bottle, a cross some 295' tall, a leaning water tower.  For lunch we found a little dive and had a horseshoe:). Affectionately a large plate of  meat and fries. We finally settle in at Vega, the official 1/2 way point of the route.
